Progesterone in Oil is an injectable medication for women that contains a naturally occurring hormone called progesterone. Progesterone is commonly referred to as the “pregnancy hormone” because it is essential in helping the uterus prepare for and maintain a healthy pregnancy. During fertility treatment such as IVF, medications used to prevent premature ovulation (Cetrotide®, Ganirelix Acetate, or Lupron®) can suppress your body’s ability to produce its own progesterone. As a result, supplementation with progesterone may be needed. Progesterone in Oil is prescribed to women to prepare the uterine lining to receive an embryo (fertilized egg) and prevent a miscarriage after the embryo implants. During IVF, Progesterone in Oil is typically taken as a daily intramuscular (into the muscle) injection at the time of egg retrieval and continued for up to 12 weeks to support an ongoing pregnancy.
Progesterone in Oil comes in a premixed 50mg/mL multiple dose vial or in a “double-strength” 100mg/mL multiple dose vial that is compounded by the pharmacy.
