Cetrotide® is a daily subcutaneous (under the skin) injection that is prescribed to women undergoing ovarian stimulation during IVF. Cetrotide® belongs to a class of medications called "GnRH antagonists” which are used to block the production of Luteinizing Hormone (LH). Because LH is the hormone that triggers ovulation, Cetrotide® injections prevent the eggs that are growing in the ovaries from ovulating (releasing) prior to the egg retrieval, called “premature ovulation”. Cetrotide® is typically started in the middle of ovarian stimulation (day 5 or 6) and taken until the day of the trigger shot.
Cetrotide® comes in a vial with powdered medication that must be mixed with sterile water before injecting.
