The Lupron® 14 Day Kit (Leuprolide Acetate) is a daily subcutaneous (under the skin) injection that is prescribed to women undergoing ovarian stimulation during IVF. Lupron® belongs to a class of medications called “GnRH agonists” which work by briefly stimulating the release of FSH and LH – the hormones responsible for egg production in the ovaries. However, when Lupron® is continued for several days, it has the opposite effect of suppressing the natural production of FSH and LH. As a result, suppression with Lupron® is commonly used in IVF cycles to prevent premature ovulation (early release of eggs from the ovary) and give your fertility doctor greater control over your ovarian cycle.
Lupron® may also be used for the following:
- During ovarian stimulation cycles, as the trigger injection to induce the final maturation of the eggs prior to egg retrieval
- During IVF to help stimulate egg production in women with low ovarian reserve or who have shown a poor response to other stimulation protocols
- Treatment of endometriosis and uterine fibroids
- Treatment of advanced prostate cancer in men
The Lupron® 14 Day Kit comes with a premixed 2.8 mL multiple dose vial of Lupron®, 14 disposable syringes, and 28 alcohol wipes. Do not confuse the Lupron® 14 Day Kit with the Lupron® Trigger. While both products contain the same medication, their respective uses are very different.
